Who Am I?

This has flashed through my email several times in the last couple days.

Who Am I?

I am under 45 years old,
I love the outdoors,
I hunt,
I am a Republican reformer,
I have taken on the Republican Party establishment,
I have many children,
I have a spot on the national ticket as vice president,
I have less than two years experience in the governor's office.

I am Teddy Roosevelt in 1900.

And he ended up on Mount Rushmore

Cute, but it leaves out the facts that, prior to his two years as Governor of New York, Teddy also graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard, served as a New York State Assembleyman, US Civil Service Commissioner, New York City Police Commissioner, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and Colonel in the US Army during the Spanish-American War.

Ms. Palin? Two terms as Mayor of Wasilla, and two terms on the Wasilla city council. Before that she was a reporter.

Judge for yourself how apt that comparison is.

anonymous, thanks, you beat me to it. The republicans are desperate to make Palin seem qualified. Her experience is certainly well below the low end of what a rational person would expect in a Vice President. They also fail to point out that she was failure as mayor of Wasilla and lies about her record as governor.

As mayor he ran up a $20 million long term dept, which is huge for a city of about 7,000 residents. She lowered property taxes but increased the city sales tax which disproportionately affects low income people. As governor she claims to be a reformer, but instead used her position to pursue a vendetta against her former brother-in-law. She claims to oppose earmarks, but pursued millions in earmarks as governor. She was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it, and didn't change her position until long after the project was killed in congress.

Here's what the New York Times said about her in a recent front page article:

"Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal."

...

"Throughout her political career, she has pursued vendettas, fired officials who crossed her and sometimes blurred the line between government and personal grievance ..."

...

"The Wasilla High School yearbook archive now doubles as a veritable directory of state government."

...

'"She surrounded herself with people she has known since grade school and members of her church."

...

"While Ms. Palin took office promising a more open government, her administration has battled to keep information secret."

(And anyone who thinks that the New York Times is a "liberal" newspaper is a mindless Kool-Aid sipping Republican automaton who, among other things, has never read the New York Times.)

liberal constructionist,

Nice talking points, how about some facts and proof?

Oh, wait, I forgot, you're a liberal, you don't deal in facts and proof.

I loved your line:

"The republicans are desperate to make Palin seem qualified. Her experience is certainly well below the low end of what a rational person would expect in a Vice President."

In response I would ask What is Barack Obama's executive experience? What is Joe Biden's Executive experience? Heck lets go all the way with this, What is John McCain's executive experience?

All three are Senators. That means the only thing they know how to run is their mouths.

In your opinion Sarah Palin's executive experience is well below the low end expectations. But in my opinion she has more executive experience than than the other three clowns in this race put together.

David, have you ever heard of "the google"? Sheesh!

And the New Your Times was just making that stuff up, right?

"Executive experience" doesn't count when you've screwed up everything you've touched as an executive. And if it's so important, why doesn't your candidate for president have any executive experience? It's obvious to anyone with a functioning brain that this executive experience meme was just recently invented because it's the only thing anyone can think of that makes Palin look even slightly qualified.

liberal constructionist,
stop avoiding the question by attacking the opposition. You have questioned Gov. Palin's experience and record, now question Sen's Obama and Biden (or in this case, answer the question). What have Sen's Obama, Biden, or McCain done to qualify them for the office of president? Actually, skip McCain to save time because I have a feeling your answer would probably be along the lines of "nothing". Just let me and the rest of America know, what either Obama or Biden done that qualifies them to hold the highest offices in the land.

So far the only answers I have heard are much more of a stretch than Palin's claims that her time as a mayor and as a governor qualify her to be VP or President should the unlikely happen.

I'll check back later for your answer.

Thank you Stan,

I just got back into town and was logging in to pretty much ask the same questions you did. You know, the same ones I asked earlier.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for a calm sensible answer though.

Oh, and LC, I have heard of 'the google' but I didn't feel like it was up to me to try and look up non-existent proof for your DNC talking points.

You know who Sarah Palin really reminds me of? No, it's not Teddy Roosevelt. It's everyone's favorite RINO, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Just like Arnold, Ms. Palin is a political unknown with star power. Just like Arnold, Ms. Palin has skipped the long and difficult primary campaign where she might have been expected to actually define herself and her positions, and jumped in for a short run to the election where she can smile and wave and speak in sound bites.

The one qualification Obama has that Palin can't match is that he's had to put up with two years under the microscope with his every move being analyzed and criticized. Palin has only had three weeks of it, and the Republicans are already crying "sexism" anytime somebody says something negative.

Anon,
And Obama (actually his supporters) cried racism any time he lost a state to HC. If you feel that the 18 months of campaigning vets a person to be president, then why is HC not the Democrats Presidential nominee? She has experience, campaigned, and did I mention she has experience.

Also, Palin is the nominee for VP, Obama is the nominee for President. I can accept an exciting and less experience VP, but I could not in good faith vote that same person in as President on day one. Please compare Obama to McCain, those are the presidential candidates. Please compare Palin, and the empty suit that is the Democrats VP nominee (nothing personal, but where has Biden been now that Palin has entered the race).

I would to point it out though that you did nail it right on the proverbial head with one sentence. And I quote "The one qualification Obama has that Palin can't match is that he's had to put up with two years under the microscope with his every move being analyzed and criticized." Let me restate that, the one qualification that the Democrat's PRESIDENTIAL nominee has that the Republican VICE-PRESIDENTIAL nominee does not have is 24 months on the campaign trail.

While that sinks in I'll point out that all of the Republican contenders for the Republican's Presidential spot on the ticket are more qualified than the Democrats selection for president. Doesn't that worry anyone else?

Stan, you and David were the ones who started comparing Palin to Obama, so don't get on me for it now.

I freely admit that McCain has the edge on Obama in experience. However, despite his campaign rhetoric, McCain is beholden to the Republican establishment, as his choice of running mate and campaign platform shows. And the way he has shifted his positions in order to secure the Republican nomination has eroded my once considerable respect for him.

On the other hand, McCain's age does make a comparison of Ms. Palin's qualifications relevant. I know he's in good health, but what do the actuarial tables say about 72-year-old men? If we elect him, we have to be prepared for his Vice President to take over. And frankly, the idea of Ms. two-term mayor taking over the leadership of this country frightens me.

Anon,

Read the posts again, the question that arose was about Gov Palin's qualifications, David asked to compare her's against Obama's or Biden's or McCain's. To continue though with the idea that Obama is qualified for president because he is more qualified than the Republicans VP pick is ludicrous. You must compare presidential nominees against each other rather than president to VP.

Relating to the whole "a heartbeat away" idea, yes McCain could kick the bucket any day now. And Senator Obama could trip on the stairs, hit his head, and become a vegetable from too much pressure from brain swelling. Conjecturing about the future helath of candidates is invalid because even at his age, McCain is very active and he has family history to show that he is not knocking on heaven's door.

What is needed is to compare the presidential candidates experience, track record, and the issues that they are most likely to face. In 2000, how many of us were worried about terrorist attacks, a bust in the market, corporate leadership's greed, or even the possibility of war. Right now we have the banks, economy, 2 small wars, national debt, Iran/N. Korean nuclear ambitions, Russian aggressions, etc.

I do not believe that a legislative branch member would ever be ready for executive powers, but I have more faith in the one who has served in the armed forces, been a POW, served honorably in the senate, and kept positive fiscal management during his/her term over the senator with 2 years of experience who has never sponsored or even cosponsored a bill and whose greatest achievement is surviving the "harsh" media spotlight on the way to earning his party's nomination. This same senator who has requested more funding for his state in 2 years than the other has in 20.

If you want to vote for Obama because you agree with his policies that is one thing, but to even begin to compare his experience with Senator McCain's is an exercise in futility. And to vote for Obama so as to be "a part of history when the first black president of the United States" is elected is an even worse argument, race does not qualify someone for the job any more than their shoe size.

So, after all that, why are you voting for Obama?

David, sorry for putting so much into the comments.

Thank you so much for showing the truth about "liberal" people.
As in they are'nt for equal rights and never have been that just worked as a campaign pleaser, why did none of the democratic presidents show that they really saw woman as equal? from kennedy to clinton all I personally saw was treatment of Monroe to Monica as demeaning and plain evil did they ever put ' some real woman in the top levels of government? And if Hilary was so fabulous in her work on the senate would'nt that take her to the next level she was capable for? Ted Kennedy's speech said it all "it's time for change" HA, what a liar he has been milking the senate for some 30 to 40 years now, and he is the wanta be he has always been. And when bipartisanship is the cure all then thats ignorance. vote for the best team not your party's ignorant choice,PLEASE!
