Crickets in the Media

Why has not one word of this been spoken by the main stream media in this country?

In mid October, at the end of his bus tour our President had this to say to the firefighters and emergency workers:

"A fair shot for everybody; a fair share from everybody. That's the principle that built America."

Does that sound at all familiar? Maybe a little something like:

"From each according to his ability; to each according to his needs."

Not only is our president quoting Karl Marx, but he is advocating Marx's communist principles are what this country was built on.

I don't know what is more disturbing - that this American hating, communist clown thinks that this country was built on the basic tenets of communism. Or that he is stupid enough to think that we will all believe him when he spouts that drivel. Or that his handlers, his speech writers, his keepers are dumb enough to let him say something like that in public.

Or is it not stupidity, is it arrogance? Is it the arrogance to believe that you can do whatever you want and say whatever you want, because you know that there is nothing that can be done to stop you? Because if he is thinking that way, what does he know about the upcoming elections that we do not know?

RIP Dennis Ritchie

Dennis Ritchie, creator of the C programming language and co-creator of the Unix operating system, has died aged 70.

I took my first C class in 1990. Prior to that I had done a lot of programming in Basic and Pascal, but really enjoyed programming in FORTRAN. Since that class I have done a lot of C programming, but still pretty much think of myself as a FORTRAN programmer.

Learning C wasn't difficult. But most of my programming experience was with fairly structured languages and C just seemed to offer me lots of different ways to really screw up everything I was doing. During one fairly stressful week in class I asked the professor "Has Dennis Ritchie ever publicly admitted that this whole language was a joke and we weren't supposed to actually use it for anything?"

My question seemed to nail my prof's funny bone. He started chuckling every time he looked at me for a week. He confided to me later that he fully understood my feelings, early in his C programming days he felt much the same way.

It didn't take me long to really warm up to C, even though it never managed to replace FORTRAN as my favorite language. But I guess I can finally stop waiting for an announcement from Dennis Ritchie.

RIP Mr. Ritchie, your work revolutionized the computer industry.

If everyone else does it, will you too?

Og over at the Neanderpundit challenged his readers to pull out their pocket knife and post a picture of it.

I've been carrying the same tool around for over 35 years. I've never really thought of it as carrying a knife. It was always just a tool in my pocket. Through the years I've used it to cut rope, string, thread, tape, cardboard, paper, plastic, plants, etc. I've dug splinters out with it. Used it to sort small parts, temperarily tighten screws, clean crap out from between keys on a keyboard, scrape gum off gym floors, clean my fingernails, and hundreds of other things that have slipped my memory through the decades.

Here's what lives in the bottom of my left front pants pocket:

pocket knife

Its a Camillus made Buck Cadet.

NPR’s Top 100 Science-Fiction, Fantasy Books

OK, this list is compiled by NPR, which I normally don't pay much attention to. I voted in their survey which was slanted in the first place because they gave us a list of what their panel of "experts" decided were the best Sci-Fi/Fantasy and let us vote for our 10 favorites. It was tough to vote for only 10. It was even tougher that books that would have easily been on my top 10 list were not even on their list. Officer, Can I See Your Gun?

This story is kind of a follow-on to my last posting. But it belongs more in the the NSTIW catagory.

When I was in 5th Grade, way back in the 60s in Rapid City South Dakota. We had a career day at school. In my class a Doctor, a Fireman, and a Police Officer came into the class to speak to us. The Doc went first and he was pretty interesting. After him came the Fireman. He was a lot more exciting to listen to, and made a lot of us want to be firemen. Then came the Police Officer.

Sorry I cannot remember his name. He was older, heavy set, and showed up dressed in uniform complete with the standard of the day - a six shot 38 special revolver. I have no idea what brand it was. He talked about being a cop in a small town like Rapid City. He was interesting but didn't have too many anecdotes to share. I guess there are only so may speeding tickets that you can write that a bunch of 5th graders will want to hear about.

When his talk was over he asked if anyone had any questions. After fielding a couple softball questions about how fast his car would go, and how loud was the siren inside the car he got nailed with a fast ball from a classmate - "Can I See Your Gun?"

The officer paused, looked around the classroom, apparently noticed that every single kid was hanging on the edge of our seats waiting for his answer. He glanced at the fireman and the doctor and the teacher when they all shrugged he hemmed and hawed for a moment then said "Sure. Why Not?"

There was an explosion in the room as every kid in the room leapt out of their seats. The officer eventually yelled loud enough that he got us all to sit back down and shut up. When he finally got us all back in our seats and paying attention, he explained how to safely handle a firearm. His safety rules were not really spelled out as rules, but pretty much jived with everything my Dad and Grandpa had been teaching me at home.

Then the officer, unsnapped his holster, drew the pistol, opened the cylinder, dumped out the six rounds and put them into his shirt pocket. Then he proceeded to explain to us all how his revolver worked. How to open it, how to check to see if it was loaded, how to hold it, aim it and how to pull the trigger.

Then he told us that we could line-up single file - the room exploded again as students flew out of their desks, toppling chairs, shoving desks and each other trying to get into line. Eventually we were all in a single file line in front of the officer. Somehow, the Doctor, the Fireman, and our teacher were the first three people in line.

As we went through the line, each person got to hold the gun, open the cylinder and check that it was unloaded, then if we wanted to we were allowed to aim the gun at the trashcan in the corner and dry fire it, both single and double action.

I don't remember much about 5th grade. But that day, that one has stayed with me for a very long time. I shudder now to think what would happen to any police officer that tried that today,in any school in this country. I also wander if the students and other adults around would be as excited to get their chance to hold that gun the way we all were?

Police + Guns + Kids = Bunched Panties in Santa Rosa

Members of the Santa Rosa Police Department at a recent community event allowed several children to examine and handle some of their SWAT weapons.

And the posie sniffing, tree hugging, guns are evil whack jobs that infest that area are having conniption fits over it.

Attila Nagy, a Community organizer was quoted

"My main concern is for kids who handle these things. They're fascinated by
them, and it makes them familiar with guns,"

So how is that a bad thing? Multiple Department of Justice Reports indicate that kids who grow up around guns, with guns, or with a knowledge of guns are less likely to commit violent crimes than those that grow up "gun free".

Oh, and by the way - ATTILA NAGY? What in the world did you do to piss off your mother when she named you? What? Was Mongolian Whiner already taken?

Bystander Elaine Holtz, confronted the officers and later told Foxnews.com:

"I would not want my child to be involved with something like that... Those guns, they should have been behind glass -- to teach the kids that you don't want to deal with this gun, because it kills."

"I am coming from the heart of a woman, a mother, a grandmother,"

To quote that great philosopher Bugs Bunny "What a Maroon!" How does someone live long enough to have offspring who have offspring and not yet learn that guns don't jump up off the table and run around killing people. May be someone should have let her handle a gun when she was little and teach her a little bit about them. Maybe then she would not be such an ignorant twit.

Good job Santa Rosa Police Department! Stick to your guns, keep sharing them with the kids in the area. Even if you do get hammered by a the looney tunes.

Why California is Swirling the Drain

I samelessly stole this list from here

The total employment of these agencies is over 350,000 and they all get salary, medical and a pension.

What will really torque you off is that everytime anyone mentions cutting our budget the only thing that our illustrious state legislatures can think to cut is education, police, fire, prisons and libraries.

Someone needs to print and staple this list to the forehead of Jerry Brown and every legislature in our state.

Osama Dead

Great, fantastic. Its about time.

Congratulations to the Navy Seals who pulled off this raid.

As much as I hate to say it - Congratulations to President Obama, it only took him over two and a half years to finally do something Presidential. Now can he follow-up on the this and not turn this into a "See what I did for you when the Republicans couldn't" moment?

I'm glad the bastard is dead. But in the grand scheme of things - it is just one more terrorist. There are still way too many of them out there plotting to do us harm. The war is not over, the threat is not over. I am worried now because I already hear morons on the news talking about how the "War is over". I'm afraid that the idiots in this country will want to stop the war, bring home the troops, and get back to their safe happy lives - turning themselves and the rest of us, back into targets for the terrorists out there who want to destroy us.

Anonymous?

Speaking to editors and publishers from Hearst Magazine our dear leader said:

"I just miss - I miss being anonymous,"

Well guess what Mr. President - the rest of us miss you being anonymous also.

If you truly miss -

"I miss Saturday morning, rolling out of bed, not shaving, getting into my car with my girls, driving to the supermarket, squeezing the fruit, getting my car washed, taking walks. I can't take a walk."

Then why the hell are you running for re-election?

What a narcissistic windbag. Remember folks we are fighting three wars, the entire middle east is looking like it is going to explode, inflation is skyrocketing, government spending is bankrupting us, the infrastructure of our country is falling apart, joblessness is still outrageously high, and our president spends his time longing for the good old days when he could take a walk.

Well go ahead and take one Mr. President - walk out of the big fancy house we loaned to you for four years, leave the keys with the guard at the gate, pick a direction, any direction and start walking. Don't turn around, don't look back, just keep walking...

My lack of world traveling is not due to lack of desire. Early on when I had the time and opportunity to travel - I couldn't afford it. Later when I could afford it I was so busy traveling (around the US) for work that the last thing I wanted to do with my spare time was get on an airplane. Now, there just doesn't seem to be enough time. I have so much going on here at home that running off around the world just seems silly.

However there are places I would love to go see:
1. Norway
2. Rome
3. Egypt
4. Alps and Pyrennes areas of France (during the Tour de France)
5. England
6. Budapest
7. Rotenburg, Germany
8. Switzerland
9. Antartica
10. Israel
11. Kenya/Uganda
12. Tibet

Traveling

I did at least two thirds of this traveling before I was 23 years old. You drive a bus or equipment truck for a drum corp for a couple summers and you end up covering a lot of territory. Especially when the vehicles keep breaking down and you get left behind with it. You find some different routes around the country in order to catch up to the drum corp caravan that kept traveling without you.

I guess I should get in gear and plan a vacation to Alaska soon. Do you think I could get Sarah Palin to take me polar bear hunting?

Happy Birthday 1911

100 years ago, March 29th, 1911 - the United States Army officially adopted the John Moses Browning self loading pistol design of 1910.

Manufactured by Colt's firearms this new military sidearm became the Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, model of 1911.

For a 100 year old design this old warhorse has stood up pretty well.

Granted mine is not a Colt. But it is a mil-spec model 1911A1. Its not very fancy, not very spectacular to look at. But I love it. I probably enjoy shooting it more than any other handgun I own.
